  • Olympic Inspired Baby Names

The Sochi Winter Olympics are in full swing. And is it just us or have you been noticing all of the amazingly original names the Olympians competing in this year’s events have? It got us thinking (of course) about baby names! Here are just a few of our favorites not only from this year’s roster of Olympians but also from Winter Olympics past. We’re curious if any of these names will start showing up on more birth certificates in the months to come. Might you be playing with a little Torin or Lolo in the snow next winter?

    Sochi Olympians

Sugar – You just might not be able to find a more perfect (or cute) name for a winter athlete or your new bundle of joy, than Sugar.

Anders – With a Nordic inspired name like Anders, you’d expect this baby to be amazing at snowsports.

Lolo – Not only is Lolo one of the more fun names featured in this year’s roster of athletes, the Olympian herself is just one of a handful who has competed in both the summer (track and field) and winter (bobsled) Olympics.

Tucker –Tucker is adorable as a baby name, but it is also the moniker of someone brave enough to conquer the luge, a sport where athletes hit speeds of nearly 90 mph.

Javier – If this beautiful name sounds exotic it’s because it belongs to a Spanish figure skater.

Bode - While most know this name as the famous US alpine skier, what you might not know is that Bode is actual his middle name. His first name is Samuel. Both are great names for a new baby boy.

Aja – This name, pronounced Asia, automatically conjures up an images of adventure (think bobsledding down a curvy track).

Torin – Torin is the name of not one but two different athletes in this year’s Sochi Olympics. One is competing in cross-country skiing and one in freeskiing.

Notable Winter Olympians of the Past

We’re guessing you can not only guess the last names of these famous past Olympians, but the sport they won their metals in.

    Apolo

  • Would You Let the Internet Pick Your Baby's Name?

Let’s face it, the name your parents give you is sort of a big deal.

Your name plays a part in nearly every aspect of your life. It determines whether you have to go by your first name and the first initial of your last name because so many kids in your class have the same name as you, if you get to buy monogramed keychains and pens from gift shops without having to customize and it can even shape the perception of potential employers when applying for a job.

So it’s pretty surprising when you hear stories like this one featured on The Bump, about a Canadian man who is allowing the Internet to help choose his soon-to-be daughter’s first and middle names.

It seems Stephen McLaughlin has set up a website called namemydaughter.com where he is allowing visitors the opportunity to suggest and vote on the name of his daughter. Luckily, for both his wife and the new baby, he has set a disclaimer that he and his wife will be making the ultimate decision.

That’s especially good news considering that the name currently in the lead (with 109,530 votes) is Cthulhu. Coming next in order next, by number of votes thus received, is: Amelia, Megatron, Charlotte, Olivia and Zelda.

For middle names, the lead thus far has gone to All-Spark (with 65,085). Trailing in second place, by more than 26,000 votes, is Mae. Also in the top five for middle names are Rose, Of-the-Sea and Doge.

Here’s a quick peek at some of the more “interesting” first names from the list:

    Streetlamp
    !
    Stormageddon
    McGlovin
    InternetJr
    Worldwideweb
    Bacon
    Google
    Cheeseburger
    Nintendo
    Daughter
    Donut
    WackyTaco692
    Obamaniqua
    Vampirella
    Tom Cruise

It will be very interesting to find out what little Cthulhu All-Spark McLaughlin’s name will really be when she arrives in April.

  • The Year of the Horse is Almost Here

A brand new year is almost here. The Chinese New Year, based on the lunar calendar, commences on January 31, 2014. Those who are pregnant or will give birth between now and February 18, 2015, will have babies born under the Chinese astrological sign of the Wooden Horse.

Chinese astrology consists of 12 different zodiac signs (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig) represented by animals as well as five different elements (fire, earth, metal, water, wood) that change depending on the year.

The zodiac sign, in addition to the element a child is born under, is part of what determines their various characteristics. Babies born in the current year, under the snake sign are said to be smart, patient, humble, energetic and humble.

So what should parents who are expecting little horses expect?

Much like the animal, babies born under the horse sign are said to be strong-willed and charming. They are also smart and filled with unbridled enthusiasm. In addition, they are said to make easy conversation and be highly organized.

A recent Huffington Post article said that parents of Horse babies should allow children born under the Horse sign to have lots of time in nature and not to impose too many restrictions on them causing them to rebel. A good sense of discipline is also encouraged to help control the sometimes stubborn horse’s impulses.

With those characteristics in mind, it’s not surprising that these are a few of the more well known Horses: Condoleezza Rice, Jerry Seinfeld, Jackie Chan and John Travolta.

  • Where's Best in the US to Have a Baby?

Are you pregnant? Do you think you live in a city with good health services and resources for expectant parents? Well, now you don’t have to wonder any longer thanks to a new list complied by WhattoExpect.com. The site has unveiled its list of 10 Best Cities to Have a Baby, and the results may surprise you.

What to Expect looked at the 100 largest cities by population in the United States and took into account three benchmarks: access to healthcare services for new babies and parents, the city’s environment for both pregnant moms and new babies, and parental support. Here’s what they came up with:

#1 San Francisco, California -While the City by the Bay is often mentioned in the media for its high cost of living, researchers at What to Expect found that in addition to cable cars, the city offers new moms and babies ample healthcare opportunities and a great environment.

#2 Portland, Oregon – The land of rain, flannel shirts and coffee shops is also apparently a great place to be a new parent. What to Expect touted the fact that the Rose City has some of the lowest infant mortality rates and low-birth weight deliveries in the nation.

    # 3 Boise, Idaho – Coming in at third place is the capitol of Idaho. The city’s high number of doulas, midwives and lots of recreational opportunities made it not only a great place for pregnant women, but their new bundles of joy as well.

Here’s how the rest of the top 10 looked.

    #4 Albuquerque, New Mexico

    #5 Spokane, Washington

    #6 Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota

    #7 Anchorage, Alaska

    #8 Rochester, New York

    #10 Sacramento, California

If you’re city didn’t make the list, don’t fret. You can also check out WhattoExpect.com’s best small cities to have a baby. In addition, the site also ranked metropolitans in terms of the best: prenatal support, pregnancy-friendly environments and new-mom healthcare.

No matter which city in the U.S. you may live in, don’t forget that Blooming Bath can always deliver you the best and most comfortable baby bathtub for your new baby.  Order yours today.

  • Most Popular Baby Names of 2013

2013 is just hours away from being history and that makes it a perfect time to look back at some of the most popular baby names of the year. BabyCenter.com has put together its list, which shows the trends skewing away from the once popular and outlandish celebrity names, to more traditional names from yesteryear.

New moms and dads in 2013 took a look back to their family trees to choose meaningful names from their distant relatives rather than trendy names, the BabyCenter.com list shows. Old fashioned names like Hannah, Victoria, Annabelle and Lucy all made the top 100 list for girls names. For the boys, classics like John, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Luke and William all made the top 100.

The top three names for 2013 were Sophia, Emma and Olivia for the girls and Jackson, Aiden and Liam for the boys. It’s the fourth year in a row that Sophia has topped the list. Jackson is making its debut topping the boys list for the first time, while Aiden is no stranger to the top (the name previously held the number one spot for eight years!).

A poll done by the site had an overwhelming amount of new moms (81 percent) choosing names that were classics over less than half (43 percent) who chose unusual or unique names.

About the same percentage of moms who chose classic names also picked their names before their new baby was born (80 percent). About 63 percent of respondents said they weren’t fans of celebrity-inspired names or trend names.

Here are the top 10 names for 2013 for both boys and girls:

    Girls                 Boys

    1. Sophia            Jackson
    2. Emma             Aiden
    3. Olivia              Liam
    4. Isabella           Lucas
    5. Mia                  Noah

    8. Zoe                  Ethan
    9. Emily              Jacob
    10. Chloe              Jack

So what are the next popular wave of baby names expected to be for 2014? Babynameslog.com predicts K names being popular in the new year including: Karter, Kendrick and King.

  • Looking Back at 2013

The gifting season is in full swing and before you know it, we’ll have rung in the New Year and 2013 will be behind us. But before that all happens, we wanted to take a break from bundling up Blooming Baths to be sent all over the world and reflect on all the great things that have happened in 2013.

Winter 2013 – Blooming Bath Gets Star Struck

We kicked off 2013 right by heading to Hollywood to show off our baby bath tubs to celebrity moms and dads at the Boom Boom Room’s Pre-Golden Globe Gifting Suite event. Not only did we get some great shots of some of our favorite entertainers with the Blooming Bath for babies bathtub, we also made relationships with a lot of other great baby products companies while we were there.

Spring 2013 – Blooming Bath Gives Back

In the springtime, Blooming Bath was honored to be able to get involved with an amazing nonprofit organization called Operation Shower. The organization supports military families by delivering baby showers to expectant moms who spouses are deployed. Blooming Bath was proud to be a sponsor of the organization and to have the ability to participate in the organization’s Hawaii baby shower event.

    Summer 2013 – Baby Craziness

Let’s face it - pretty much everything baby related that happened in the summer of 2013 centered around the new royal, Prince George, being born across the pond. While a number of publications (including HELLO! In Canada) featured the Blooming Bath as a gift fit for a prince, we’ve yet to confirm that the wee lad has in fact, had the luxury of bathing in one of our posh tubs. (We’ll be sure to keep you posted).

Fall 2013 – Blooming Bath Goes Big

During the fall, Blooming Bath hit a huge milestone when it announced that our products could be purchased online at Babies “R” Us, America’s leading baby retailer. The news also meant that parents-to-be can register for the Blooming Bath for babies bathtub on the Babies “R” Us gift registry for their baby shower gifts.

During the fall the Blooming Bath was also named as a She Knows Parenting Award winner for 2013 in the Newborn Essentials category. It’s the second year that Blooming Bath has been recognized in the awards.

So as you can see, we’ve had a lot to celebrate in 2013 and we are looking forward to even more exciting updates heading into 2014. But until then, we've got to getting back to shipping out Blooming Baths.

Speaking of shipping, don't forget to order before the holidays. Right now when you order on bloomingbath.com you can upgrade to priority mail (3-day delivery) at the standard shipping price of $7.
