  • Baby Names Analyzed By Age

When it comes to picking your baby’s name there are a variety of places to draw your inspiration, from popular movies and television shows, to baby name websites, to your own family tree. Now, there is another new twist on how to evaluate potential names – by the age of individuals with a certain name.

A recent article on FiveThirtyEightLife took data from the Social Security Administration and charted it against actuarial tables to find out how many living Americans have a particular name. The results were particularly interesting, especially when it came to female names.

The authors found that a name like Brittany only came into vogue within the last few decades, starting in the early 1980s. Which means most Brittanys you meet likely won't be much older than 25. The article also looked at the median ages of women with the 25 most common names.

Most Lisa’s are in their 40s, while most Dorothy’s (not surprisingly) are closer to the 70 age-range. Anna, is one female name that has spanned the decades with the median age of people living who have the name being 31.

Perhaps most interesting to new parents are the names of the younger set. When it comes to young female names, Eva, Mia, Sophie, Ella and Isabella are predominately in the 5 to 8 year-old range. For boys, Mason, Jayden, Liam and Aiden were between the ages of 4 and 8 years old.

One take away is, if you want to avoid your child entering preschool with 5 other kids with the same name, check out some of the article's findings, or you can just name your daughter Gertrude. The median living age for that name is 80, with 25 percent being over 87!

  • Blooming Bath Called a Must-Have for Siblings

Our friends over at Miss Frugal Mommy have discovered the Blooming Bath for Babies bathtub and were kind enough to write this lovely review about our comfy baby bath tub.

Miss Frugal Mommy is expecting baby number 3 (congrats!) and has been prepping her older children on how to be a good big sibling to the new arrival, including practicing how to give their new little brother or sister a proper bath. The kids have been practicing with baby dolls and, according to mom, it's not just the younger members of the family who are looking forward to the ease of bathing the new baby in the Blooming Bath.

"As my memory recalls, bath time wasn’t always the most fond experience for my children when they were newborns. There are so many things you must worry about in order to keep your baby happy and content during baths and I can’t imagine trying to add two siblings to the mix. However, the Blooming Bath has officially put all my worries aside and I am greatly looking forward to stress free bathing with the new baby and helpful siblings," Miss Frugal Mommy writes.

She goes onto say that in addition to creating a more relaxing baby bath time, the Blooming Bath will allow for more family bonding and less time spent worrying about adjusting baby, which had been the case using old-school, slippery plastic bath tubs.

"I truly believe that this is a must-have baby product, especially if there are younger siblings," she says.

You can read Miss Frugal Mommy's full review here. And don't forget that the Blooming Bath for babies makes a great shower gift, especially for mommies with bigger kids who want to help bathe the new baby.

  • Baby Bathing Tips from Blooming Bath

Here at Blooming Bath, we’ve become somewhat of an expert in the art of baby bathing techniques, picking up tips not only from our loyal customers, but also from hours of practice. Whether you are a seasoned grandma, or a brand new parent, here are some baby bathing tips that everyone from novices to experts can appreciate.

    Baby Bathing Tips

    - Before you even turn on the tap, think about the room temperature that you are bathing your baby in. Is it chilly? Babies lose heat quickly so it’s always a good idea to turn up the heat in the kitchen (if you are bathing baby in the sink) or bathroom to around 75 or 80 degrees F prior to the bath.

    - Set your water heater temperature to 120 degrees F so you don’t have to worry about accidental burns, which can happen at the factory setting of 140 degrees F.

    - Before getting the tub and water ready, be sure to get everything you’ll need (towels, soaps, etc.) in near proximity to the tub so you never have baby out of your sight.

    - Never put your baby in the bath while filling up the tub or sink because the temperature can change and get too hot, or the water level can get too deep.

    - Make sure the bathwater is comfortably warm by testing with your wrist or elbow. Keep in mind that babies and toddlers generally prefer their tub water cooler than adults do.

    - Be mindful of the types of bubble baths and soaps that you use on baby, being sure to choose baby-safe options as to not irritate their sensitive skin.

    - Experts recommend only bathing newborns 2-3 times per week, instead opting for more frequent hand and diaper-area cleanings. (If your baby’s umbilical cord is still intact, avoid baths altogether and use baby wipes or washcloths).

    - The most important tip: Never leave baby unsupervised in the tub and always keep at least one hand on baby.

    Benefits of Baby Bath Time

The benefits of bath time are numerous. Not only is baby bath time a great way for parents and baby to bond and create a regular routine, bathing babies (especially in the comfy Blooming Bath) is a great way to calm fussy little ones. A warm bath before bedtime can also help prepare baby for a restful night of sleep, something all parents crave in the first few months of parenthood.

  • San Diego Fires Causes Blooming Bath Office Evacuation

Well, it’s been an interesting week around the Blooming Bath office. As those who live in San Diego County (where our headquarters are located) are well aware, California Gov. Jerry Brown declared the area in a state of emergency on Wednesday as high temperatures and excessive winds aided in the spread nine wildfires throughout the region.

Luckily, there were no injuries reported from the fires, but thousands of residents were advised to evacuate their homes as well as those in attendance at local schools and working in local businesses, including us here at Blooming Bath.

The smoke and fire got close enough to our Carlsbad office for us to snap the above photo before we were advised to evacuate for our safety.

On Wednesday, we closed the Blooming Bath office at 2 p.m. and phone and email communications ceased as well as our regular mail and package carrier pickups. Blooming Bath employees are safely back in the office today and getting back to our customer’s phone and email messages as well as getting back to shipping out our Blooming Bath for babies bath tubs. Many schools in the area, however, including San Diego Unified School District are still closed today.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the residents in the area dealing with fires on their properties and businesses and with the firefighters who are hard at work protecting us. Thank you!

  • Lace Up Your Sneakers for a Great Cause!

Do you live in Southern California? Well then it’s time to lace up your running or walking shoes and do some good for babies. That’s right, it’s almost time for the 6th Annual Miracle Babies 5K!

Miracle Babies is a nonprofit organization that provides support and financial assistance to critically ill newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (nicu). In addition, the organization helps enhance the well-being of women, children and their families through education, prevention and medical care.

For many of us, we know personally or have had friends and family members who have had premature babies that required care in the neonatal unit. In fact, about half a million babies – as many as 15 percent of those born in the United States each year - are treated in the NICU for everything from birth defects, to breathing and heart problems, to infection.

For parents of preemies it can be a stressful experience both financially and emotionally. That is why Miracle Babies is such a great organization to support.

Whether you like to run, walk or volunteer, this is a great opportunity to give back. The event takes place on Sunday, May 4 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Embarcadero Marina Park South (1 Marina Park Way, San Diego).

In addition to helping support this great cause by attending, after the race, runners, walkers and guests are invited to join the “Celebration of Life Resources Fair” with vendors, music and the not-to-be-missed inflatable world kids’ play zone. There’s also a diaper dash for kids under 3. Don't miss this great event. You can register here. Hope to see you there!

  • Tips For Saving Money During Baby's First Year

Are you expecting a baby? Have you recently had a baby? If so then you probably already know that the first year having a new baby in the house can be an expensive one. According to US Department of Agriculture data, the numbers pencil out to an average of $12,000 in the first year.

A recent story from Wall St. Cheat Sheet offers advice on how parents can shave down some of the costs accumulated in the first year. Here are some of their tips:

Saving Starts At the Hospital – Perhaps one of the biggest costs of a new baby is the delivery at the hospital. Do your research in advance and find out exactly what your insurance plan covers so you can budget before baby comes. One way some moms have chosen to save money is by skipping the cost of getting an epidural and having a natural birth. Be sure to discuss your options with your doctor to find a birth plan that is both economical and comfortable for you.

Choose Baby Food Wisely – Another huge chunk of new baby budget comes in the form of food. Breastfeeding is one way to save a lot of money on baby formula and many experts will tell you it’s more nutritious for baby as well.  If you have a food processor, it’s also easy to make your own baby food rather than buying baby food by the jar.

Check Out Consignment Shops – Babies grow out of things at a rapid rate and we’re not just talking about clothes. Baby swings and car seats also have size restrictions. Be sure to do your research before you buy and try to get things that will last the longest for your growing baby. Be sure to talk to other parents whose babies have grown out of items to see if they are willing to sell or give away items that are no longer used. Baby-specific consignment shops also offer great prices on essential items like high chairs, cribs and strollers.

Be a Blooming Bath Product Tester and Get Free Stuff - Do you live in the San Diego area? If so and you have babies between the ages of 2 months and 6 months, you can earn free Blooming Bath baby products if you come to our Carlsbad office and test out our new Blooming Bath baby products.
